Gas Monitoring and Control
SECCRA is currently operating a power plant that generates “green energy” for the benefit of the local community. The Landfill Gas to Energy Project, known as SECCRA POWER, is located at the SECCRA Community Landfill.
Once regarded as a nuisance, methane gas, a natural by product of the decomposition of solid waste in landfills, is now recognized as a "greenhouse gas" twenty times more powerful than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the upper atmosphere. What was historically burned or "flared" off is now a highly valued resource.
Currently, SECCRA POWER is in full operation, and is producing approximately 2.4 Megawatts of power.
This power is produced directly from the landfill gas which is generated by the decomposition of solid waste over time at the SECCRA Community Landfill.
SECCRA POWER, is connected to the PJM Interconnection, Inc. (PJM) grid through a transmission system maintained by PECO Energy.
In addition, there are substantial environmental and local benefits to be gained from this project including the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of dependence on nonrenewable resources, and the promotion of a locally produced “green power” energy resource which will replace the equivalent of well over 27,000 tons per year of coal or other fossil fuels.
