SECCRA Partners with Waga Energy to Convert Landfill Gas into Renewable Natural Gas

SECCRA (Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority) is proud to announce a partnership with Waga Energy to transform landfill gas into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG). This innovative project will generate enough clean energy to heat approximately 4,300 homes annually, marking a significant step forward in sustainable waste management and renewable energy production.

The gas utilized in this project is generated by the SECCRA Community Landfill, which receives waste from 24 municipalities across southern Chester County. For over 56 years, SECCRA has served the region as a trusted steward of waste management, operating with a focus on environmental protection and resource recovery.

In 2007, we launched a landfill gas-to-electricity project that converted the landfill gas from waste decomposition into electricity for the regional grid. This initiative earned the US EPA’s Project of the Year award and has been a cornerstone of our green energy efforts for the past 17 years.

Now, we’re taking that innovation to the next level. By partnering with Waga Energy, we will replace our aging electricity-generation system with advanced technology that cleans and processes landfill gas into RNG. This purified gas will be injected into the natural gas grid, creating a sustainable energy source that benefits our community and the planet.

SECCRA remains committed to leading the way in sustainable waste management and renewable energy. Together, we’re turning yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s energy.
